I was recently introduced to the idea of libraries becomming transparent. Posted below is an abbreviated version of some of my ideas about libraries becomming transparent.
On one hand, I think having a transparent library is a great idea. I think if all departments in the library had to post their current events or projects on a blog that would help improve communication among staff. Also staff would be able to better assist the public. I have always felt a patron should not have to ask two or more people about a library program to find out basic information about a program. I think a transparent library where all staff is encouraged to share ideas will make more staff feel appreciated.
On the other hand, all decisions in any organizations are not black and white; sometimes leaders of an organization are force to sacrifice one thing to acquire or maintain something else. The general public may not have enough knowledge about the issue at hand to make an educated judgement call.
Overall, I am all for the idea of having a semi-transparent library. Increasing the communication within the library will be beneficial to staff and patrons. I think the public seeing librarians maintaining blogs and wikis will help create a connection between the two groups. Most people do not know the role of the library in the community or what a librarian actually does. I think a semi-transparent library will help demystify the library and draw the patrons into the library.
Thats my two cents . . .
