Strategic Planning

If your organization does not have a time to physically get together to create a strategic plan, why not do it virtually?

While trying to find a source about strategic planning I ran across some open source software that guides and creates an organizations strategic plan. On the down side unlike the free open source software we have used in class this software cost a couple of hundred dollars. People intrested in the product can take a virtual tour and download a demo of the product.

Here is a copy of the link to learn more about outsourcing your strategic plan:

My personal managment philosophy

The four basic management functions are planning, organizing, influencing, and controlling. Good understanding of the four functions of management, combined with proper execution of these four functions provides a strong foundation for anyone seeking to be a successful manager. Planning is necessary to identify the best processes needed to accurately complete a goal. The organizing function helps put ideas created during the planning function into action. The influencing function is used to ensure the team or a staff is all on one accord and is working towards the same goal. The controlling function requires the manager to guide staff through the process to ensure the ending goal is achieved.

My philosophy of management is to execute these four functions of management efficiently. If a staff is under the direction of a manager that does not know how to carry out the four functions of management, the staff will not be able to achieve organizational goals accurately. The manager’s inability to utilize the four functions of management will make their staff look disorganized and unqualified for their current positions. This could result in members of the manager’s department constantly being overlooked when an opportunity for advancement opens within the organization. I also believe it is the manager’s responsibility to make sure that he/she fully understands the organization’s mission and vision for its future. The manager should always make sure that all staff, professional and paraprofessional, understands the mission and vision of the organization as well.

I have so much more to say but this is starting to get long. :P

Managment

Hello All,

Here is a copy of the citation for the article I talked about in class about improving communication as a manager.

Mathis, R. (2007). Building bridges through effective communication. Supervision, 68(10), 3-4.

Mr. Mathis provided several recommendations first to help a leader get his organization to believe in his vision and then to help move the organization towards achieving the now shared future goals.

I love the Wii

The Wii is great! I have decided to give myself a Wii as a graduation present to myself in December. You really feel like you are in the game because the Wii requires you to actually move. Maybe parents will like the Wii as well because it requires physical interaction.

D-Lib Magazine

I wanted to let everyone know about a free electronic magazine called D-Lib Magazine (http://www.dlib.org/). This magazine is has the latest information about digital library research.

I really like the "Featured Collection" section of the magazine because it gives you the opportunity to see an example of what a noted digital collection looks like. Also the "Featured Collection" section can help you generate ideas abut how to improve your digital library.

Transparent Libraries

I was recently introduced to the idea of libraries becomming transparent. Posted below is an abbreviated version of some of my ideas about libraries becomming transparent.

On one hand, I think having a transparent library is a great idea. I think if all departments in the library had to post their current events or projects on a blog that would help improve communication among staff. Also staff would be able to better assist the public. I have always felt a patron should not have to ask two or more people about a library program to find out basic information about a program. I think a transparent library where all staff is encouraged to share ideas will make more staff feel appreciated.

On the other hand, all decisions in any organizations are not black and white; sometimes leaders of an organization are force to sacrifice one thing to acquire or maintain something else. The general public may not have enough knowledge about the issue at hand to make an educated judgement call.

Overall, I am all for the idea of having a semi-transparent library. Increasing the communication within the library will be beneficial to staff and patrons. I think the public seeing librarians maintaining blogs and wikis will help create a connection between the two groups. Most people do not know the role of the library in the community or what a librarian actually does. I think a semi-transparent library will help demystify the library and draw the patrons into the library.

Thats my two cents . . .
